In this blog I am going to explain you why physics is considered to be one of the profound subject of the 21th century. What has physics done for humans and the importance of physicist in this world. It is perhaps the highest-impact, lowest-cost area of basic research. The field advances our fundamental understanding of the universe, and seeds the technologies of tomorrow. Solar cells, computers, wireless technologies, diagnostic imaging – they are all rooted in breakthroughs made by theoretical physicists. So what is physics? Physics for me is the study of matter and energy. The matter that we humans and everything around us is made up of and the energy without which we wouldn't be here. Humans have always asked the big questions "where do we come from? what is out there? Is there life out there? " and physics is the ultimate key to provide answers to this big questions. Questions like this have driven human to unlock the mysterious of cosmos since ancient Greece. By unlocking the laws of nature we are not only understanding the universe but we are also developing new and more advanced technology. The reason is simple: since any technology relies on the laws of nature, the better we understand those laws, the more powerful the technologies we can create. Electricity and magnetism which we now call electromagnetism were once thought to be unrelated forces. Theorist James clerk maxwell building on the experimental work of Michael faraday on electricity and magnetism, discovered that this two forces are infact one single force and named it electromagnetism. Faraday and Maxwell’s work eventually led to the development of electric motors, generators, and a safe electric power distribution system ("the grid"), the cleanest and most versatile form of energy the world has ever seen. Guglielmo Marconi applied Maxwell’s electromagnetism to send the first wireless message between continents, the Communications Age was born, changing our lives with radio, television, smartphones and wireless internet. By pondering the nature of space and time, Albert Einstein unexpectedly discovered that matter is a concentrated form of energy, which soon led to an understanding of how stars like our Sun work, by a process called fusion. These ideas are currently being applied or contemplated in some of the largest-scale science and engineering projects in human history to harness the power of fusion. So from above examples you can see how new discoveries led humans to develop new technologies and unlock the mysterious of the cosmos. I am on a journey to find out more on the importance of physics. I will be interviewing few physicists in coming weeks from imperial college, kings college and queen mary universities along with few mathematicians to unlock the mysterious of physics.
